LAB TEST

Liver Function Test (LFT)

The liver is one of the body’s hardest-working organs—responsible for detoxifying the blood, processing nutrients, and producing essential proteins. The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a vital diagnostic tool that helps assess the liver’s overall health and detect signs of inflammation, damage, or disease. Whether used as part of a routine check-up or to monitor specific conditions, LFTs provide an essential snapshot of how well your liver is functioning and can help catch problems before they progress.

What is an LFT & Why is it important?

An LFT is a group of blood tests that measure key enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver. These include bilirubin, albumin, and enzymes such as ALT, AST, and ALP. Abnormal levels may indicate liver inflammation, infection, or damage caused by alcohol use, medication, or other medical conditions.

  • Early Detection of Liver Disease: Identifies conditions like hepatitis, fatty liver, and cirrhosis early on.
  • Monitors Ongoing Conditions: Tracks the progress of liver diseases and response to treatment.
  • Assesses Medication Effects: Ensures prescribed drugs aren’t causing liver stress or damage.
  • Guides Lifestyle and Dietary Changes: Helps doctors recommend specific adjustments to protect liver health.

What Is Done in an LFT

A small blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in your arm. The sample is then analyzed in a laboratory to measure:

Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST):

Indicators of liver cell damage.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP):

Measures bile duct function.

Bilirubin:

Evaluates how well the liver processes waste.

Albumin and Total Protein:

Check the liver’s protein production capacity.

What You Should Know Before an LFT

You may need to fast for 8–12 hours before the test, depending on your doctor’s instructions.

Avoid alcohol and heavy meals prior to the test, as these can affect accuracy.

If you’re taking medication, inform your healthcare provider—some drugs may alter liver enzyme levels.

Abnormal results do not always mean disease; further testing is often recommended for confirmation.
