When to go to an Emergency Department

Sometimes it’s difficult to know whether to seek emergency care. As a rule, if you believe your life or the life of a loved one is in danger, call emergency services or come directly to the Emergency Department. You should come in immediately if you experience:

  • Chest pain or pressure, especially if it spreads to the arm, jaw, or back.
  • Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or severe wheezing.
  • Sudden weakness, numbness, slurred speech, or difficulty understanding others (possible stroke).
  • Severe injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or broken bones.
  • Loss of consciousness, seizures, or fainting spells.
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially if accompanied by fever or vomiting.
Your loved one may need emergency mental health care if they are:
  • Expresses thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
  • Talks about harming others or shows violent behavior.
  • Appears confused, disoriented, or unable to care for themselves.
  • Experiences sudden, extreme mood changes or agitation.
  • Suffers from hallucinations or delusions that put them at risk.
