LAB TEST

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is one of the most informative blood tests available. It provides an in-depth look at how your body’s metabolism and vital organs are functioning — including your liver, kidneys, and pancreas, as well as your blood sugar and electrolyte balance. This test gives doctors a broad overview of your body’s internal chemistry, helping them identify potential health concerns early on.

At My Health Medical Centre, our laboratory uses modern, highly accurate testing technology to perform CMP analyses quickly and efficiently. Whether as part of your annual check-up or to monitor a chronic condition such as diabetes or hypertension, the CMP is an essential diagnostic tool that helps maintain long-term wellness and prevent complications.

What is a CMP & Why is it important?

A CMP provides early insight into many of the body’s most important systems. It’s especially valuable for individuals managing chronic illnesses, taking medications that affect the liver or kidneys, or monitoring lifestyle-related conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Here’s why it is important:

  • Assesses Organ Function:Evaluates how well your liver and kidneys are performing essential metabolic processes.
  • Detects Imbalances: Identifies electrolyte or fluid irregularities that can cause fatigue, weakness, or dehydration.
  • Monitors Blood Sugar: Helps diagnose and track diabetes or insulin resistance.
  • Guides Treatment Decisions: Assists your doctor in adjusting medications or lifestyle recommendations based on your body’s metabolic state.

What Is Done in a CMP

During the test, a small blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm. The process is quick and performed by trained healthcare professionals under sterile conditions. Once collected, the sample is analyzed in our laboratory to measure the following key markers:

Glucose

Measures blood sugar levels to assess for diabetes or metabolic disorders.

Hemoglobin (Hb):

Measures the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Low levels often indicate anemia.

Calcium:

Helps evaluate bone, muscle, and nerve function.

Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride:

Electrolytes that maintain hydration, nerve signaling, and muscle activity.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂):

Helps measure your acid-base balance (pH) and lung function.

Albumin and Total Protein:

Evaluate nutritional status and liver function.

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine:

Assess kidney performance and filtration efficiency.

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST):

Enzymes that indicate liver health and possible damage.

Bilirubin

A marker of liver and bile function, useful in detecting jaundice or liver disease.

What You Should Know Before a CMP

For best accuracy, avoid eating or drinking (except water) for 8–12 hours before the test.

Inform your doctor of any medicines or supplements you take — some can temporarily affect metabolic results.

Drink plenty of water before your appointment to make the blood draw smoother.

You may feel a slight sting when the needle is inserted, but the procedure is brief and well-tolerated.

Results are typically ready within 24–48 hours, and your doctor will explain what each measurement means for your health.
